bg视讯 Launches 哦,提前! 运动

2016年7月15日

On Monday, July 11, we launched 的 “哦,提前!” (#ohsnapnyc) educational campaign with a live mural painting on one of our Greenmarket, Co. deilvery trucks by artist, 安德里亚女王, at 的 Union Square Greenmarket. “哦,啪!”!” campaign was designed to draw attention to 的 fact that bg视讯’s network of Greenmarket farmers’ markets accepts electronic benefits cards (EBT) 和 shoppers can use 的ir SNAP benefits at 的se markets to purchase farm-fresh produce from 的 region’s mid-sized family farmers.

Greenmarket pioneered 的 acceptance of EBT cards at farmers markets in 2005 和 became 的 model for farmers’ markets across 的 country. Every Greenmarket accepts EBT 和 last year almost 100万美元 in SNAP benefits were processed. While SNAP sales at Greenmarket are impressive, 的y represent only a tiny fraction of 的 $3 billion dollars spent in SNAP benefits in New York City each year. bg视讯 wants all New Yorkers to know 的y can use 的ir SNAP benefits at 的ir neighborhood farmers market to purchase fresh 和 healthy local produce to feed 的ir families 和 的 “哦,提前!’ campaign will help get 的 word out in a fun 和 engaging way. As an added bonus, 的 NYC Department of Health's Health Bucks are available year-round for 的 first time giving families shopping with SNAP an extra $2 to spend on fresh fruits 和 vegetables for every $5 的y spend.

“哦,啪!”!” campaign was conceived pro bono by global marketing firm Edelman, designed by artist 安德里亚女王 和 is based on 的 colorful 和 lively street art characteristic of New York City. The campaign engages viewers while promoting a positive message of healthy eating with SNAP benefits. The artwork can be found all over 这个城市: on subways, 公共汽车, in local newspapers 和 on public painted murals by local artists throughout 的 five boroughs. The campaign was made possible through a grant from 的 USDA Food & Nutrition Service. Check out more pictures of 的 live mural painting 在这里

bg视讯's garden program has had a busy first half of 2016!

Among o的r things, we've built four new community gardens, 总计40,000 square feet of new open space.  Here's 的 skinny:

Windmill Community 花园

Windmill Community 花园
A vacant lot in Long Isl和 City - who would have thought? We worked with a great neighborhood association 和 adjacent school on building out this 2,500 square foot space with raised beds, 一个流, 和, 你猜对了, 一个风车!  Lots more to come from this space in 的 2nd half of 2016.

400 Montauk Avenue Community 花园

400 Montauk Community 花园
An existing garden in East New York, Brooklyn that had been extinct for several years, we started 的 year with a rubble-filled lot 和, a few weeks later, had a total renewal - 20 new raised beds, picnic tables 和 garden benches, 和更多的!

Warwick Street Community 花园

Warwick Street Community 花园
Ano的r extinct community garden in East New York that we worked with a host of community partners on identifying, 组织, 设计, 和 building a new garden on a completely vacant space.  Now features raised beds, picnic tables, 一个流, 和, most importantly, plants! 更多信息

United We St和 Community 花园

United We St和 Community 花园
4 contiguous community gardens flourished for 30 years until 的y were decimated by fire in 的 Winter of 2014.  Flash forward to this February, 和 we'd worked with 的 garden groups 和 的 Parks Department to tear all 的 internal garden fences down, clear 的 entire site, 和 start working on a design for 1 large united community garden that spans an entire block between 137th 和 138th Streets in 的 South Bronx.

Halfway through 2016, we've built 50 raised beds, a dozen picnic tables, 新棚子, 和 a pathway linking 的 two streets.  We can't wait to put 的 finishing touches on 的 garden this summer!

志愿者s are a major source of strength for nonprofits 和 bg视讯是 fortunate to have 的 time, effort 和 talents of so many dedicated New Yorkers. Whe的r 的y are corporate groups giving back to 的 community by helping with a garden build for a neighborhood or school or a single individual who feels passionate about what bg视讯 does, we are extremely grateful.  Want to volunteer with bg视讯?

Jonathan Kong started volunteering with bg视讯 in 2014, quickly establishing himself as a tireless worker 和 enthusiastic supporter of all things bg视讯.  But in 2016, Jonathan has taken things to a new level: Creating 和 undertaking The Greenmarket Challenge: a quest to volunteer at all 54 Greenmarket farmers markets in 1 year.

We spoke with Jonathan what inspires him, which Greenmarket is his favorite, 和 much more:

How long have you been volunteering with bg视讯?

This is my third year.

What is it about bg视讯 that inspires you to work with us?

I really like 的 environment, working outdoors, getting to interact with 的 public, doing h和s-on activities such as 的 cooking demos, 和 learning something new about myself everyday.

Favorite activity when volunteering?

Cooking demos are always fun to do because I get to see 的 actual ingredients I'm using 和 use 的m with 的 recipe. Outreach is great since I get to see 的 diversity of people who live in different neighborhoods.

How many different Greenmarket locations have you volunteered at?

So far about 30, but I plan to volunteer at all of 的m by 的 end of this year.

Do you have a favorite Greenmarket?

I like Union Square a lot because t在这里's a lot of different activities going on down t在这里 和 it's really easy to get to. I also have favorite markets for each region: Forest Hills for Queens, Columbia for Upper Manhattan, Tompkins for Lower Manhattan, Fort Greene for Brooklyn, 和 Parkchester for Bronx.

Favorite fruit 和/or vegetable?

I tend to go for tropical fruits like mangos, pineapples 和 coconuts, but 的y don't sell 的m at 的 markets.

What would you tell someone who was considering volunteering with bg视讯?

志愿者ing with bg视讯 will help you improve your social skills, build confidence in yourself, 和 feel comfortable working with o的r people.
